It’s time for Dewey’s Read-A-Thon! I’ll be keeping track of my progress here and posting on Twitter (@ElizabethMelle, #readathon) whenever there is an update. This year I’m captaining #TeamEliot, so look for their cheers floating around blogs and Twitter.

Scroll down for mini-challenges!

Goals: Finish 3 titles and read 800 pages

Pages read: 320
Time spent reading: 3 hour 57 mins
Time spent cheering: 2 hour 30 mins
Titles finished during Read-A-Thon: 2

Reading:
Smoke by Ellen Hopkins (130/543)
A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin (43/1177)
Too Long a Solitude (Poems) by James Ragan (FINISHED – 77pgs)
Love Poems by Anne Sexton (FINISHED – 70pgs)

Updates

7:07am – I’ve still got a quiche to make! That and coffee, then I’ll begin reading.

8:19 – I’ve made a quiche. That is all. Cheering for now, because I think if I try to read I may fall asleep.

9:19 – Ate some quiche, did a little cheering, and now I’m settling in to read for a little while.

11:09 – Don’t fall asleep on your Kindle. The bedroom is cold and I’m curled up in a pile of blankets. Smoke moves quickly, but isn’t catching my interest right now so I’m switching to something else.

12:21pm – Poetry was a good idea. James Ragan’s “Too Long a Solitude” is great. My favorite is easily the last poem in the collection, for Debora, “Sometimes”.

12:54 – Cheered a little more, took care of some behind the scenes captaining (what a weird word) stuff, and I’m going to wait around for the next hour to check out some mini-challenges. Later this afternoon I plan on making these pumpkin bars.

5:07 – Since I last checked in there was one tiny, accidental nap, and several more pages read. And lunch. About a quarter of the way through with Smoke. Eh. I’m not sure about this one. I’ll finish it, but it’s not my favorite. I can’t decide if it’s one of the POVs I don’t like (Jackie) or the whole thing. It’s been a while since I read the first one and I’d forgotten some of the events that preceded this book. Took a break from that to start A Storm of Swords and I’m flying through that, as fast as a person flies through GRRM.

7:49 – Anne Sexton’s Love Poems. Yowza. Spent some time cheering earlier. Had some chocolate. Having a marvelous time!

Opening Meme:

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
Norman, Oklahoma
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
Anne Sexton’s Love Poems
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?
Dark chocolate with cherries and almonds
4) Tell us a little something about yourself!
Umm…5 months ago I was in Scotland!
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?
Taking things pretty slowly today. I just finished a couple of books earlier this week and I’m well ahead schedule to meet my goal to read 50 books this year, so I’m just going to enjoy things and take whatever break (NAPS) I need.

Quotable Quotes
From my favorite poem in the Ragan collection:
And sometimes, and only in spring,
a dove from the river’s soft vale of lilies
will fly as close to you as trust,
and a calm in the great reds of autumn
will, as often as you need, lie down
beside you, raising a brow you’ve known
above the eyes of the only woman
you will ever have a need to dream or touch.

Mid-Event Survey:
1. What are you reading right now? Just finished Anne Sexton’s Love Poems
2. How many books have you read so far? Finished 2, have been reading 4
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? Hoping to get further into ASoS and maybe start the Anne Lamott book I picked up yesterday at the library.
4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? Not real interruptions, just me and my own poor decisions :)
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? I’ve felt less rushed about this one. I don’t know what that’s all about. And I’ve done WAY more cheering early on than I anticipated.

Casual Closet Cosplay
Dorothy, The Wizard of Oz, because I still had the dress from high school and it still fit after 11 years…and now I have the little dog to go with it. She was not amused.
